BUPROPION SUSTAINED RELEASE - ORAL (SMOKING DETERRENT)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Zyban
USES: This medication is used to help you quit smoking.

Uses
Zyban is used to help you quit smoking.

How to take Zyban
Swallow Zyban whole. Do not crush or chew them or the sustained activity of the drug will be destroyed and the chances of side effects occurring may be increased. Take as directed, usually twice daily for 7 to 12 weeks. Do not take more or less medication than prescribed. Since Zyban can cause sleeplessness at first, it is best not to take near bedtime. It is advised to continue smoking for the first week after starting this drug, until it reaches higher levels in your blood. Do not smoke if using any nicotine products with this drug. Too much nicotine can cause serious side effects.

Side effects
Zyban is generally well tolerated. Dry mouth, headache, increased sweating, constipation, anxiety and fatigue may occur. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor.

Precautions
Before taking bupropion tell your doctor if you have a history of seizures, head injury, brain tumor; heart, liver or kidney disease, an eating disorder or any mental conditions, diabetes or if you have any allergies. Limit or avoid consumption of alcoholic beverages; alcohol can increase your risk of seizures. Chronic alcohol users who suddenly stop the intake of alcohol while taking bupropion may increase the risk of having seizures. Suddenly stopping certain tranquilizers (e.g., diazepam, chlordiazepoxide) is not recommended because doing so may increase the risk of having seizures. Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the effects of this drug. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant before taking this drug. This drug is excreted into breast milk. Because of the potential risk to the infant, breast-feeding while using this drug is not recommended. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Drug interactions
Before taking bupropion tell your doctor of all nonprescription and prescription medications you may use especially MAO inhibitors (e.g., isocarboxazid, phenelzine, tranylcypromine, pargyline, selegiline, furazolidone), levodopa, theophylline, corticosteroids (e.g., prednisone), seizure medications, sedatives, ritonavir, tranquilizers/psychiatric drugs (e.g., chlorpromazine), other antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline), salicylates (e.g., aspirin, salsalate), isoniazid, chlolinesterase inhibitors (e.g., tacrine, donepezil), morphine, and adrenaline-like drugs (e.g., pseudoephedrine). Excess caffeine intake can increase the chance of seizures with this drug. Check all nonprescription/prescription drug labels for caffeine. Consult doctor or pharmacist. A certain product used to help quit smoking contains bupropion. Do not take that product while using this one.

Notes
Do not allow anyone else to take Zyban.

Miss dose
Take any missed dose as soon as possible but not if it is within 8 hours of the next dose. If it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not "double up" the dose.

Storage
Store at room temperature and keep away from moisture and sunlight. Keep this and all medications out of the reach of children.

From the Surgeon General
We now know that cigarettes are addictive and that nicotine is the drug in tobacco that causes addiction. Smokers are compelled to smoke by this addiction to nicotine, but it is the over 4,000 other chemicals in cigarette smoke that cause the most harm. This combination makes cigarettes deadly.

What is it About Nicotine?
When you smoke, nicotine enters the bloodstream through the lungs. It quickly reaches the brain, where it affects certain chemicals that change the way you feel. Eventually, the brain becomes dependent on nicotine to control these chemicals that make you feel "normal."

Am I Addicted?
You may be addicted to cigarettes if you experience one or more of the following signs:

  • You continue to smoke despite the desire to quit.
  • You have made a serious, but unsuccessful, attempt to stop using tobacco or permanently reduce the amount you use.
  • Your attempts to stop smoking have led to physical withdrawal symptoms, including a craving for tobacco, anxiety, irritability, restlessness, difficulty concentrating, headaches, drowsiness, and upset stomach.
  • You develop a "tolerance" for tobacco. Smoking the same number of cigarettes produces less effect over time, making it necessary to increase the number of cigarettes you smoke to achieve the desired sensation.
  • You have continued to use tobacco even when you have a serious physical problem (such as cardiovascular or respiratory disease) that you know is worsened by tobacco.

Withdrawal
When smokers who are addicted to cigarettes quit smoking, they may suffer from symptoms that can be psychological, emotional, or physical in nature. This is called withdrawal. They may experience irritability, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, restlessness, or depression. Fortunately for many patients, ZYBAN reduces withdrawal symptoms and the urge to smoke.

ZYBAN is a nicotine-free pill. Not a patch. Not a gum. ZYBAN is the first nicotine-free pill to help you quit smoking. A prescription medicine available only from your healthcare professional, ZYBAN has helped many smokers, even those who have smoked 10 years or more, put down their cigarettes. No one has to know you're using it, except you and your doctor.

You start taking ZYBAN and continue to smoke. ZYBAN gets you ready to put down your cigarettes. You start taking ZYBAN and set a quit date to stop smoking during the second week. Most people should take ZYBAN for at least 7 to 12 weeks. When you stop smoking, continue to take ZYBAN as recommended by your healthcare professional. One pill 2 times a day can help you break free from smoking.

ZYBAN is priced lower than smoking and some other smoking cessation therapies.*? Although your health insurance company may cover smoking cessation therapy, many don't. The graph below shows the approximate price of ZYBAN for 7 weeks of therapy. Additionally, assuming a pack of cigarettes costs $3.00, a year's worth of smoking one pack a day costs $1,095.00 ... 2 packs a day cost $2,190.00. ZYBAN costs less than cigarettes and is a far better investment in your future than smoking is.
