What is Evista

EVISTA® (raloxifene HCl) is a prescription medication that prevents and treats osteoporosis in women past menopause. EVISTA is neither an estrogen nor a hormone. EVISTA is a Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator, or SERM. It helps build bone without negatively affecting the breast or uterus. EVISTA prevents and treats osteoporosis by actually helping make your bones stronger and less likely to break. Over 34 million prescriptions for EVISTA have been filled since the FDA approved it in 1997.

Evista side effects

An infrequent but serious side effect of taking EVISTA® (raloxifene HCl) is the development of blood clots in the veins. These blood clots can stop blood flow and cause serious medical problems, disability or death.

Call your doctor or healthcare professional right away if you have or have had any of the following signs of blood clots in the veins of the legs, lungs, or eyes:

• leg pain or a feeling of warmth in the calves
• swelling of the legs, hands or feet
• sudden chest pain, shortness of breath or coughing up blood
• sudden change in your vision, such as loss of vision or blurred vision

Most of the side effects of EVISTA are mild and usually do not cause women to stop taking EVISTA. The most common side effects of EVISTA are hot flashes and leg cramps. Hot flashes are more common during the first 6 months after starting treatment.

1. Is EVISTA^® (raloxifene HCl) an estrogen or hormone?
   EVISTA is not an estrogen nor is it a hormone. EVISTA is in a class of medications called Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators, or SERMs. EVISTA helps build bone without negatively affecting the breast or uterus. This means that EVISTA does not cause breast tenderness or vaginal bleeding. Also, EVISTA does not increase the risk of breast or uterine cancer.
   
   
2. Can EVISTA prevent osteoporosis?
   Yes. EVISTA helps prevent osteoporosis. It actually stops the thinning of bone and increases and maintains the amount of good, quality bone.
   
   
3. Can EVISTA treat osteoporosis?
   Yes. EVISTA treats osteoporosis by helping to make your bones stronger and less likely to break.
   
   
4. What are the side effects of EVISTA?
   EVISTA is not for everyone. If you are or still can become pregnant, are nursing, have severe liver problems, or have had blood clots that required a doctor's treatment, you cannot take EVISTA. An infrequent but serious side effect of EVISTA is blood clots in the veins. Being immobile for a long time may add to the risk.
   
   The most commonly reported side effects are hot flashes and leg cramps. Side effects with EVISTA are usually mild, and most women don't find them serious enough to stop taking it.
   
   
5. How do I take EVISTA?
   You can take EVISTA any time of day, with or without food (it may be taken along with a calcium supplement, and/or vitamin D), as your doctor or healthcare professional prescribes.
   
   
6. Can EVISTA be taken with estrogen?
   In clinical trials, EVISTA has not been studied in combination with any form of estrogen that comes in a pill, patch, or injection. EVISTA should not be taken with any of these forms of estrogen.
   
   
7. Can EVISTA be taken with aspirin or ibuprofen?
   There are no data that suggest you cannot take aspirin or ibuprofen with EVISTA. You should discuss all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter and herbal medications, with your doctor or healthcare professional.
   
   
8. Does EVISTA increase my risk of breast or uterine cancer?
   No. In clinical trials, EVISTA did not increase the risk of breast cancer. EVISTA also has not been found to increase the risk of uterine cancer. The effectiveness of EVISTA in reducing the risk of breast cancer has not been established.
   
   
9. Does EVISTA have an effect on cholesterol?
   In clinical studies for osteoporosis, EVISTA was shown to lower total LDL (bad) cholesterol. In these studies, EVISTA had a neutral effect on HDL (good) cholesterol. EVISTA is not approved by the FDA for the prevention or treatment of heart disease.
   
   
10. Does EVISTA cause vaginal bleeding or breast tenderness?
    No. EVISTA should not cause spotting or menstrual-type bleeding. EVISTA also has not been found to cause breast tenderness or enlargement.
    
    
11. How can I tell if EVISTA is working?
