Can I Use c-Site to Register a Song I Wrote and Recorded on CD?

c-Site CD

Yes, but first you must determine whether you’re registering the song as a Performing Arts work or a Sound Recording. The examples below differentiate between the two:

  • You write the lyrics and music to a song. You record the song on a CD. The underlying lyrics and music are Performing Arts works which you can register with the U.S. Copyright Office using c-Site. And, you can submit the actual CD as your copyright deposit in support of your copyright registration application.
  • The CD embodying your particular performance of the song is a Sound Recording, which is separate and distinct from the underlying musical or dramatic work. Registering a claim to the recording only and not the underlying music and lyrics, requires submission of a Sound Recording registration application (as opposed to a Performing Arts registration application). c-Site does not currently provide copyright services for Sound Recording registrations.
